In 2011 british police decided that they needed a new way to control rioters, they turned to the ‘SMU’. The SMU 100 was originally made to combat pirates in Somalia but after the UK riots the company (Photonic Security Systems) shifted towards trying to sell their equipment to people interested in controlling rioters. The shoulder-mounted laser emits a flash of light about three meters (9.8 ft) across, which can blind a target up to 500 meters (1,640 ft) away. The use of The SMU was for testing purposes only. Apparenlty the Uk Government in an unusual display of intelligence decided that teenagers trying to steal Televisions from highstreet shops proberly don’t deserved to be blinded. Pirates on the other hand are already used to wearing eyepatches.
